Improving Teaching through Better Evaluation Measures: Lessons from Algebra Classrooms
Current policy initiatives focus on improving teacher evaluation methods and practices in order to support a range of decisions that include retention, compensation, and professional development. In addition to models based on student achievement, there is substantial interest in examining classroom practice directly through the use of observation protocols. In this talk, I present findings from a study of algebra classrooms that highlight issues related to the validity of measuring teaching quality through classroom observation. I also consider implications of this research for policies and practices of teacher evaluation.
