School of Education doctoral student Josh Childs was recently named a University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA) Barbara L. Jackson Scholar for the 2011-2013 class. The organization provides mentoring, knowledge sharing, networking, and educational opportunities in line with UCEA's commitment to diversity, equity, social justice, and helping more students of color obtain faculty positions at universities.
Currently in his 2nd year at the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Learning Sciences and Policy, Childs’ research is focused on urban school reform, social network analysis and theory, the federal-state-district policy pipeline, and the policy implementation involved in turning around low-performing schools. Childs’ added, "I'm also interested in youth engagement in changing social norms around tobacco and alcohol usage and sales.”
Childs’ educational background includes graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and History from the University of Tulsa in 2006, followed by earning a Master of Arts in Education Foundations, Policy and Practice from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2009. He’s currently a K. Leroy Irvis Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education.
As part of the UCEA scholar, he’ll be mentored by Dr. Mark A. Gooden at the University of Texas. While in the program, Childs hopes to, “Network with other graduate students who research and are concerned about the country's K-12 schools, connect with other professors who do high-quality research, and work with my mentor on developing a plan to not only graduate but obtain a faculty level position in higher education.”
