Noelle Newhams, an undergraduate student at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education, was recently awarded a TruFit Good Citizen Scholarship™ for $7,500 from Citizens Financial Group (CFG). This is the first year that CFG has offered the scholarship, which is given to high school seniors and current college students whose volunteer efforts have made a difference in their communities.

“We created this scholarship program as a way to reward those students who have invested their time and energy in making their communities better places to live,” said Brad Conner, CFG’s vice chairman of consumer lending.

Applicants were asked to write an essay of no more than 500 words or tape a 90-second video explaining the responsibility and leadership skills they have exhibited through their community service experience. Newhams, who is studying applied developmental psychology in the School’s Department of Psychology in Education, wrote an essay discussing influences in her life that contributed to her desire to enter the field of psychology, community involvement, and public service, and why the scholarship would be helpful in her education.

CFG awarded twenty scholarships totaling $50,000 to students who reside in or plan to attend college in one of the 12 states that it is located. In addition to Newhams, four other winners received $5,000, and 15 were awarded $1,500. The money can be applied to the current fall semester or spring 2012 semester.
