Western Pa Writing Project Helps Student Filmmakers Investigate Important School and Community Issues

Published on 2/20/2012 7:00:00 AM

In partnership with CMU’s Hear Me, The Consortium for Public Education, and Pittsburgh Filmmakers, the Western Pa Writing Project (WPWP) is working with students at Woodland Hills, Steel Valley, Clairton City, and McKeesport to create youth-produced videos that concern issues in their communities. Made possible by funding from The Heinz Endowments, the project is called Hear Me 101: Social Advocacy through Youth Video.

WPWP Fellows Sue Carris, Nick Kaczmarek, Michelle King, and Matthew Luskey are collaborating with students on the writing, producing, and promotion of short digital documentaries that investigate important issues relevant to their communities. The teachers are helping students develop these projects during Saturday workshops and through on-site school visits, along with contributing to a workbook manual that has been published by The Hear Me Project. Upon completion of the documentaries, student groups will design a public campaign to help promote and inspire social change in their communities.

For more detailed information about the project, see the article on The Consortium for Public Education website.
