The Executive Cohort for Educational Leaders (ExCEL) is the University of Pittsburgh's Superintendent's Letter of Eligibility Certificate program.
ExCEL's purpose is to prepare leaders who champion K-12 schools and who are committed advocates for children and youth.
The Executive Cohort in Educational Leadership was conceived with the career-oriented school leadership professional in mind. ExCEL is designed to prepare superintendents and other executive school leaders to manage the opportunities and challenges presented by new and emerging visions of education.
ExCEL is organized around three themes:
- Vision and Transformational Leadership
- Relational Leadership and Governance
- Competent Management of Resources
The program accommodates the needs of working professionals through very clear timelines and a hybrid course delivery model. It's design provides the working, adult professional student with flexible, supportive, and reliable learning experience. Letter of Eligibility certification is earned in 20 months.
A Regional Focus and Global Perspective guide the curriculum. The Educational Leadership faculty recognizes the larger context of educational practice and policy within a connected global society. A global perspective also helps to explain the demand for accountability for schools and the increasing pressure placed upon local, state, and national governments and institutions as a result of intense international competition.
ExCEL's rigorous curriculum and practitioner-friendly delivery system affords a limited number of aspiring educational leaders the opportunity to develop the values and competencies required for effective school district leadership. The curriculum addresses both the core needs of school leaders and the critical issues facing children, families, personnel, school boards, and communities.
Students who wish to earn both the Letter of Eligibility and a Doctorate of Education should consult the Admissions Office before applying for this certification program.
