Admissions for Language, Literacy, and Culture - Doctor of Education (EdD)

Admissions Requirements

  • Completed School of Education Admissions Application.
  • A non-refundable application fee of $50 (USD) by credit card, check, or money order payable to 'University of Pittsburgh'.
  • Compete individual transcripts of work done in all undergraduate and graduate study (an overall minimum QPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in undergraduate work for students without a master's degree and a 3.3 in previous graduate work for students with a master's is required).
  • Official, third-party evaluation of all international transcripts for applicants who have not received a master's degree within the United States. We strongly recommend using, World Education Services (WES), to complete this service.
  • Scores from the General Test section of the GRE (required for all US students, recommended but not required for international students.
  • A statement of purpose in which you articulate your career goals and reasons for pursuing a PhD or EdD degree.
  • A minimum score of 600 on the paper-based TOEFL, 250 on the computer-based TOEFL, and a composite score of 100 in the internet-based TOEFL with a minimum of 25 in each of the four skills is required for admission. The International English Language Testing System may also be submitted as evidence of English language proficiency. An average score of 7.5 is necessary for admission with no lower than seven in any of the four skills.
  • Three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with your academic and professional work; one letter must be from a university professor.
  • A sample of professional writing in the form of a previously completed term paper, master's thesis, article, etc.

Deadline

  • Applications are reviewed once a year and must be received by January 15 for enrollment in the fall semester. Late applications will only be considered on a case-by-base basis.
