Area 1: Major Field
A 30 credit concentration in one of the following Social Science areas: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, or Sociology

Area 3: History Survey Courses
Six credits of History Survey coursework is required. These courses should cover broad periods of time. For example, History of Western Civilization I or II, History of the United States to 1865, History of the United States from 1865 to Present, History of Medieval Europe, etc.
These courses could overlay with coursework in Areas 1 and/or 2.

Area 4: Cross-Cultural or International Courses
Six credits of Cross-Cultural or International coursework is required. For example, History of Modern Latin America, Cultures of the Far East, World Politics, etc.

Education Prerequisites
For Professional Year students, the four education prerequisites must be taken prior to the fall term of the PY program. Evidence of clear federal (FBI) criminal history and clear state clearances (Act 33/151-PA Child Abuse History and Act 34-PA State Police Criminal Record Check) is required before taking Introduction to Social Studies Education. Information on obtaining these clearances is available on the School of Education website at www.education.pitt.edu.
