Head of School
Employer: San Francisco University High School
Job Category: Administrative
Location: San Francisco, CA, USA
Carney, Sandoe & Associates has been retained by San Francisco University High
School in San Francisco, CA, to assist in its search for a new Head of School
effective July 2013. Regarded as one of the finest secondary schools in the
country, University High was founded in 1973 in response to a deeply felt need for a
highly academic, co-educational, independent secondary school in the Bay Area.
Today UHS is an exemplary institution of 389 students, 57 teaching faculty, and 38
administrators, all of whom are committed to making possible the highest-quality
academic and personal experience for its students.
Intentionally small, UHS boasts the curriculum and resources of much larger
institutions. The campus consists of four buildings, within blocks of each other,
nestled in the historic and handsome residential neighborhood of Pacific Heights.
Admission is highly competitive. Students enter UHS from 73 different middle schools
throughout the Bay Area. 38% of the students self-identify as persons of color, and
within the faculty and staff, there are 35% persons of color. This year UHS awarded
$2.25 MM in financial aid. The Summerbridge program was created at UHS in 1978 and
provides tuition-free academic enrichment to motivated and underserved Middle School
students. The Summerbridge model has been replicated by independent schools
throughout the country.
University High School seeks a Head who has proven leadership skills, and the
capacity to guide the school to the next level of excellence across all areas of
focus. Ideally this person should have demonstrable advocacy for diversity of all
kinds. The next leader should have a personal style that encourages community,
collegiality and collaboration, with the ability to communicate successfully not
only with all school constituencies, but also with the community-at-large. Marketing
and fund-raising skills are important strengths for the next Head.
University High School offers a compelling and exciting opportunity for its next
Head of School. You may visit the school’s website at www.sfuhs.org. Please
