PSYED 2519 - QUALITATIVE METHODS: PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION

THIS COURSE IS AN INTRODUCTORY COURSE IN ONE OF THE MAIN METHODS OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH -- PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION. STUDENTS WILL GAIN COMPETENCE IN KEY AREAS OF ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH INCLUDING: ESTABLISHING ACCESS TO A SITE, WRITING ETHNOGRAPHIC FIELDNOTES CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING RIGOROUS RESEARCH, ARTICULATING RESEARCH QUESTIONS, DETERMINING A UNIT OF ANALYSIS, DEVELOPING CONCEPTUAL CATEGORIES, CODING, AND WRITING UP FINDINGS. STUDENTS CONDUCT SEVEN WEEKS OF FIELDWORK IN ORDER TO COMPLETE A PILOT STUDY OF THEIR CHOOSING. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE USE OF DATA ANALYSIS SOFTWARE , SUCH AS NUDIST AND ATLAS/TI, IS NOT PERMITTED.
