IL 3219 - ACADEMIC DISCOURSE

THIS COURSE FOCUSES ON THE FEATURES OF WRITTEN ACADEMIC DISCOURSE RELATED TO EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH. SPECIFICALLY, THIS COURSE PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO ANALYZE ARTICLES AND CHAPTERS FOR THE PURPOSES OF DISTINGUISHING THE VARIOUS GENRES AVAILABLE TO EDUCATIONAL RESEARCHERS, AND IDENTIFYING THE STRUCTURES OF ARGUMENT AND EXPLANATION THAT THOSE GENRES REQUIRE. THIS ANALYSIS WILL BE INFORMED BY THEORIES OF ARGUMENTATION AND DISCOURSE PUT FORTH BY ARISTOTLE AND TOULMIN WHOSE WORK PROVIDES DISCOURSE-RELATED CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORKS AND TERMINOLOGY.
