Applied Developmental Psychology - Master of Science (MS) Overview

The Master of Science Degree in Applied Developmental Psychology emphasizes the integration of knowledge of human development with the skills and expertise essential for developing, implementing and evaluating effective programs for children, youth and families. Students combine core developmental course work with select courses including professional practice skills, methods electives and an internship to focus in on any one of the following specializations:

  • School-Based Behavioral Health
  • Developmental Research
  • Program Design and Leadership
  • Individually Designed Specialization
  • Instructional 1 Certificate (Pro Year) Option

Unique Features

The MS Program is designed for students who wish to bridge research and practice, linking developmental research and theory in the development, administration and evaluation of programs and policies that promote the development of children and youth. Special emphasis is placed on understanding the contexts and practices in families, schools and communities that promote positive human development. The program emphasizes evidence-based practice, the use of mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative) and program evaluation. Students can learn to make complex assessments of clients and program needs, design and manage programs and planned environments, integrate therapeutic and developmental requirements into the life space, translate research into policy and practice and take leadership in systems interventions in supervision, administration, consultation and advocacy.

Job Opportunities

Graduates of the program are equipped to work in a wide variety of professional settings, including day treatment, group homes, residential centers, detention centers, early care and education, early intervention, home-based support and intervention, psychiatric centers, pediatric health care programs, and colleges and universities. Some graduates also proceed to doctoral study and other professional schools such as law. Graduates of the program hold position such as:
