Dean's Welcome

Welcome, Pitt Education alums!

It's a special pleasure to welcome you to the Pitt School of Education web site. My colleagues and I are proud of the many accomplishments of your alma mater, and I know that you share our pride. Our current and past students and faculty are working throughout the region and beyond to help individual students, schools, and school systems improve. Indeed, almost every place I go, someone has a story to tell me about a Pitt Education person who has made a difference. In just the last week, I met an alum from Mercer County who told me of the great help that Professor Emeritus Charles Gorman provided to schools in that county. Today, I heard from a current student who just gave her first paper at a professional meeting after extensive encouragement and mentoring from Professor Michael Gunzenhauser. A few days ago, I was reminded by a number of people at a conference on reading of all the ways in which Professor Rita Bean has helped individual children, reading teachers, and reading specialists over the years. Local media leaders and health insurance leaders tell me how important the work of John Jakicic has been in getting Pittsburgh to become Pittsburgh on the Move. The education leaders of Mongolia praise the help they get from Professor John Weidman, while leaders in Indonesia have good things to say about Professors Clementina Acedo and Maureen McClure. Indeed, I list these examples with trepidation, because so many other faculty and students are equally worthy of mention. The faculty and students in our School also are contributing as scholars. They edit journals, write important books, win major awards and grants, and are making a difference as they create deeper understanding and validate more effective processes of education.

These contributions – as scholars, teachers, and leaders – do not end when a student leaves our School. We are very proud of you who have been our students. So, when you have a moment, write and tell us what you have been up to. We're looking for opportunities to brag about all of you. Send me the latest news about you (AL@PITT.EDU), and I'll make sure it gets to the right folks for further circulation. Know that all of us here in the Pitt School of Education get great joy from news of your accomplishments.

Best wishes,
