15th Annual Student Research Conference
All students, faculty, and staff in the School of Education are invited to attend the 15th Annual Council of Graduate Students in Education (CGSE) Student Research Conference taking place February 25-26, 2009. This year's conference includes excellent student presentations, great food, and a thought-provoking keynote address. For more details about the conference, view the schedule of events and presentations and a map of the location of the keynote address.
CGSE is pleased to announce that Dr. Joseph Donnelly, Director of the Center for Physical Activity and Weight Management at the University of Kansas, will be the keynote speaker at our annual research conference. Dr. Donnelly is known for his research in the area of childhood obesity and has designed innovative ways for teachers to incorporate physical activity into their daily teaching routines. This emphasis on the integration of physical activity and classroom learning should draw the interest of not
only HPA students, but also students from other departments throughout the School of Education.
The 2009 proposal submission window is now closed. Please stay tuned for proposal submission guidelines for the 2010 Student Research Conference.
Below you find specific information about submitting a conference proposal for consideration for the 15th Annual Student Research Conference. This year's electronic submission process will be similar to last year's; however, there will be a proposal submission window from Monday, November 10, 2008 until Friday, January 16, 2009 for all submissions. Students may electronically submit a proposal beginning on November 10, 2008 and will have until 5 p.m. Friday, January 16, 2009 to submit a proposal. We
strongly encourage students to look over these submission guidelines as they continue their graduate work and to begin thinking about submitting a proposal.
To submit a proposal (no more than 500 words) for a paper, poster, or panel presentation, please click on the links below to download the Individual Presentation Proposal Form (paper or poster) or Panel Presentation Proposal Form.
Then complete the following steps:
- Completely answer all questions on the form by typing directly into the document
- Resave the completed document as your last name.doc (ex. smith.doc)
- Email the completed proposal form (as an attachment) to CGSE Conference Committee (cgseconference@gmail.com) and copy your academic advisor on the email.
Any research related to dissertation, Master's thesis, course work, project work, classroom research, or other independent work is eligible for submission. Collaborative research with faculty is eligible for submission as long as the student has played a substantial role in the research.
The Proposal Submission Deadline is January 16, 2009, at 5 p.m. All proposals undergo "blind" review by members of the committee. The review committee consists of graduate students with representatives from the different departments in the School of Education. We look forward to receiving your proposal!
See below for more information concerning specifics about the conference and proposal submissions.
About the Conference
Mission Statement
The primary purpose of the 2009 CGSE Student Research Conference is to provide students from all academic levels with an opportunity for professional development by encouraging presentations of research involving students as investigators and by providing a forum for critical feedback. The CGSE Student Research Conference is designed to simulate an academic conference atmosphere and to foster collegiality among students and faculty from all four existing departments in the School of Education. CGSE
seeks to provide students with an opportunity to experience activities in which they are likely to engage throughout their future professional lives, including writing conference proposals, presenting their work, responding to feedback, exchanging ideas with colleagues throughout preparation for the conference, and attending as many conference sessions as possible.
Who can submit a proposal
Students from all academic levels who are currently enrolled in the School of Education may submit a proposal to present recently completed or on-going research in one of three different presentation formats: paper, poster, panel. Any research related to dissertations, Master's theses, course work, project work, classroom research, or other independent work is eligible for submission. Collaborative research with faculty is eligible for submission as long as the student has played a substantial role in
the research. In 2009, the conference will be held during evening and daytime sessions in order to enable both part-time and full-time students to participate.
Presentation Formats
Paper Presentation
Each paper presentation will be 10-15 minutes in length (including time for questions) and may be submitted as an individual session (a single piece involving one or more authors) or a collective session involving several pieces of related research (panel). This paper format is ideal for work that is in more advanced stages of completion (such as a research paper) since it requires a formal presentation of a well-formulated research problem, study design, methodology and some discussion of results (if
available). Students wishing to be eligible to present in the paper presentation format must submit the Individual Presentation Proposal Form (single piece of research) or a Panel Presentation Proposal Form (collective session involving several pieces of related research), which both require a maximum 500-word abstract as part of the proposal form. It is recommended that the abstract contain the following information [please use APA style]:
- Statement of the problem
- Theoretical background/conceptual framework
- Research question(s)
- Methodology (Including a description of data analysis)
- Results
- Educational significance of the research
For collective sessions (panel), an overall introduction describing the rationale for the collective session and/or how the presentations are related should be prepared. The individual proposals for each presentation should be collectively attached to the overall introduction and everything should be submitted as a set. Panel presentations will be 1 hour and 15 minutes in length, allowing 15 minutes per paper as well as time at the end for questions.
Poster Presentation (Use Independent Presentation Proposal Form)
Poster presentations will take place in large group sessions the opening night of the conference. Students will be given poster space on which to display important information regarding the research they are presenting. The poster format allows the opportunity for more extended, informal discussions with attendants. Such conversations may allow for more extensive feedback on the work than can be gained in the 15 minute paper presentation format. This format may be ideal for presenting either completed
work or works in progress. Students who wish to be eligible to present in the poster format must complete an Individual Presentation Form, which includes an abstract of no more than 500 words in length as described above in the paper presentation section [please use APA style].
Guidelines for submitting proposals
Any student who wishes to present in the conference must email CGSE Conference Committee (cgseconference@gmail.com) the following by 5pm, January 16, 2009:
- The completed Individual or Panel Presentation Proposal Form saved as last name.doc and emailed to cgseconference@gmail.com as well as copied to the student's academic advisor.
The committee reserves the right to return any set of materials not conforming to the above requirements. Please direct questions by email to cgseconference@gmail.com.
