ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
MISSION STATEMENT
The primary purpose of the 2008 CGSE Student Research Conference is to provide students from all academic levels with an opportunity for professional development by encouraging presentations of research involving students as investigators and by providing a forum for critical feedback. The CGSE Student Research Conference is designed to simulate an academic conference atmosphere and to foster collegiality among students and faculty from all four existing departments in the School of Education. CGSE
seeks to provide students with an opportunity to experience activities in which they are likely to engage throughout their future professional lives, including writing conference proposals, presenting their work, responding to feedback, exchanging ideas with colleagues throughout preparation for the conference, and attending as many conference sessions as possible.
WHO CAN SUBMIT A PROPOSAL
Students from all academic levels who are currently enrolled in the School of Education may submit a proposal to present recently completed or on-going research in one of three different presentation formats: paper, poster, panel. Any research related to dissertations, Master's theses, course work, project work, classroom research, or other independent work is eligible for submission. Collaborative research with faculty is eligible for submission as long as the student has played a substantial role in
the research. In 2008, the conference will be held during evening and daytime sessions in order to enable both part-time and full-time students to participate.
MONETARY AWARDS
Every student presenter at the 2008 CGSE Student Research Conference will receive a small monetary award in the form of a gift certificate. The value of the monetary award and the precise manner in which they will be distributed will be determined after all proposals are received. In addition, the CGSE Conference Committee will recognize two students for their exemplary research by awarding them with The Outstanding Researcher Award.
PRESENTATION FORMATS
Paper Presentation
Each paper presentation will be 10-15 minutes in length (including time for questions) and may be submitted as an individual session (a single piece involving one or more authors) or a collective session involving several pieces of related research (panel). This paper format is ideal for work that is in more advanced stages of completion (such as a research paper) since it requires a formal presentation of a well-formulated research problem, study design, methodology and some discussion of results (if
available). Students wishing to be eligible to present in the paper presentation format must submit the Individual Presentation Proposal Form (single piece of research) or a Panel Presentation Proposal Form (collective session involving several pieces of related research), which both require a 250-word abstract as part of the proposal form. It is recommended that the abstract contain the following information [please use APA style]:
- Statement of the problem
- Theoretical background/conceptual framework
- Research question(s)
- Methodology
- Data analysis
- Results
- Educational significance of the research
For collective sessions (panel), an overall introduction describing the rationale for the collective session and/or how the presentations are related should be prepared. The individual proposals for each presentation should be collectively attached to the overall introduction and everything should be submitted as a set. Panel presentations will be 1 hour and 15 minutes in length, allowing 15 minutes per paper as well as time at the end for questions.
Poster Presentation (Use Independent Presentation Proposal Form)
Poster presentations will take place in large group sessions the opening night of the conference in the 1st Floor Galleria of Posvar Hall. Students will be given poster space on which to display important information regarding the research they are presenting. The poster format allows the opportunity for more extended, informal discussions with attendants. Such conversations may allow for more extensive feedback on the work than can be gained in the 15 minute paper presentation format. This format may
be ideal for presenting either completed work or works in progress. Students who wish to be eligible to present in the poster format must complete an Individual Presentation Form, which includes an abstract of no more than 250 words in length as described above in the paper presentation section [please use APA style].
GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING PROPOSALS
Any student who wishes to present in the conference must email CGSE Conference Committee (ccgseconference@gmail.com) the following by 5pm, February 1, 2008:
