Elementary Education - MEd with Reading and Special Education Concentrations Overview

Who is eligible for this program option?

The 36-credit MEd program option is designed for certified elementary teachers who did not graduate from the University's Professional Year program and want to complete a Masters Degree. There are two MEd program options.

What is the difference between the two MEd options?

  • Option 1 (general MEd) is a 36-credit program that enables the student to take a broad range courses to expand upon both theoretical and content-based learning.
  • Option 2 (specialized MEd) is a 36-credit program that enables the student teacher to expand their knowledge, specifically, of special education and reading and open the option for future second certifications in either or both areas.

What are the goals/objectives of this MEd option?

  • To enable practicing teachers to enhance their understanding of and improve their ability to meet the diverse needs of children included in their classrooms.
  • To enable teachers to advance their understanding of one or more content areas they are currently teaching.
  • To enable teachers to broaden their understanding of educational research, educational theories as they apply to practice, action research practices, and educational policy.

Are there other things involved besides the coursework?

  • In the last term of the program, it is required that all MEd candidates sign up to take a 3-hour, written comprehensive exam. It is scheduled in October and March of each year. Other times can be arranged with the students' advisor.
  • In the first week of the last term, MEd candidates must sign up for graduation.
