Elementary Education - Masters of Education for Professional Year Students Overview

Who is eligible for this program?

This graduate program is specifically designed for students who have completed the Professional Year teacher certification program at the University of Pittsburgh and wish to continue their studies to earn a Masters of Education degree. Students completing the Professional Year Teacher Certification Program may apply up to 18 credits from their certification studies toward the 36-credit masters degree. All exiting Professional Year students are given the option to apply to the MEd program after the completion of their Professional Year.

What are the requirements of the degree?

Requirements are:

  • Complete 18 additional credits beyond those already completed for certification
  • Take and pass a 3-hour written comprehensive exam
  • Register for at least one credit during the term in which you will be graduating
  • Register in the Student Service Center for graduation within the first two weeks of the term in which you will be graduating
  • Your advisor will be the Coordinator of the Elementary Education Program (Meryl Lazar). She must sign your registration form each term, so contact her early in the term(s) in which you wish to register.

Students are expected to complete the MEd degree within 3 years after graduating from the PY program, but extensions can be granted.

What are the admission requirments?

Students may apply for admission to the Masters Program as soon as they complete the requirements for the PY Program at the exit meeting from their certification program.

Applicants to this Masters Degree must submit:

  • A completed application form for re-admission
  • The application fee (the application fee is waived if the PY students complete and submit their application at the exit meeting at the close of their teacher certification program).

When should candidates apply?

For students not making application at the PY exit meeting, the application deadlines are:

  • March 1 for Summer Session or Fall Term
  • November 1 for Spring Term
