ETS's Research & Development division has an opening for a distinguished researcher who will provide intellectual leadership with respect to psychometrics for the Cognitively Based Assessment of, for, and as Learning (CBAL) project. The CBAL project is a highly ambitious, long-term research and development activity aimed at creating an innovative system of summative and formative assessment for use in K-12 and other contexts. The individual being sought will serve as the lead psychometric advisor to the project on measurement issues, policies, and procedures: examples include, but are not limited to equating, scaling, and aggregation of information across multiple measures. The successful applicant must have expertise in and deep knowledge of current research in educational measurement and statistics. The successful candidate must also have the skill and interest in conceptualizing and
exploring creative solutions to difficult psychometric problems. The position will be at the level of Senior Research Scientist or Principal Research Scientist, depending on qualifications.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Identifying the psychometric challenges that emanate from the CBAL design
Creating a detailed research agenda to address those psychometric challenges
Providing expert consultation to project staff on technical aspects of their work related to psychometrics
Proposing and carrying out psychometric projects that fit the research agenda
Providing high-level technical oversight and guidance to other psychometric and research staff on the project
Disseminating empirical and theoretical research findings that addresses CBAL-related technical problems through peer-reviewed publications and presentations
Working with the CBAL team leads to define test design constraints that will help to ensure technical quality of scores from CBAL assessments
Working with the CBAL team leads to define what can and cannot be defensibly reported from CBAL assessments
Educating project staff about the implications of technical quality for assessment design decisions
REQUIREMENTS
A Ph.D. in educational measurement, psychology, statistics, education or a related field with an emphasis on quantitative analysis or psychometrics.
A distinguished record of scientific achievement and publication
Ability to work effectively as a member of a team in a consulting environment
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills in both written and spoken English
