What’s Love Got to Do with It?
The Heart of School Readiness & Success

June 4, 2008 Westin Convention Center Pittsburgh Hotel

The Annual Family Support Conference began in 1994 to gather parents, family support staff, policy makers, human service professionals, community leaders and other individuals committed to children and families to discuss issues and trends, hear new ideas in the field, and network!

The SCOPE of Family Support...

Strengthening Families with Services and Support
Child Development, Health and School Readiness
Outreach to Families–especially those who would not otherwise participate
Parent Leadership and Advocacy
Economic Self-Sufficiency

The Family Support movement consists of over 30 centers in Allegheny County primarily funded by the Allegheny County Department of Human Services. All centers are unique because they are designed by parents and community members to address their specific needs. However, they each follow the same 7 principles: parent governance; relationship and strengths-based; services designed by and for participants; reflects, respects and enhances cultures of community; program evaluation; and serve the entire family without eligibility requirements.

At the 2008 Family Support Conference

More than 830 people attended including child care providers, educators, human service professionals, community leaders, and more than 160 parents. Through an outreach initiative made possible by The United Way of Allegheny County, 30 parents not affiliated with family centers were provided with scholarships to attend the conference.

Conference participants heard from Allegheny County family support parents and teens and attended 28 workshops on various topics focused on school readiness. Dr. Adolph Brown, III enthralled attendees this year with his dynamic keynote presentation. We are pleased to announce that Doc will be returning as our keynote for the 2009 Family Support Conference!
