Leadership Initiative for Transforming Schools (LIFTS): a new program for preparing principals

Posted: 3/19/2009 4:50:04 PM by Rick Taylor

The School of Education is pleased to announce the launch of the Leadership Initiative for Transforming Schools (LIFTS), a newly redesigned 15-month principal certificate program to start summer 2009. LIFTS will be offered at two off-campus sites, Allegheny Intermediate Unit and the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown. The rigorous, cohort-based curriculum will afford a limited number of the most talented teacher leaders in our area the opportunity to study together with University faculty and master practitioners. The program is designed to offer “learning experiences” to address both the core needs of school leaders as well as the critical issues facing children, teachers and administrators today. The LIFTS core academic program will be further augmented by a number of institutes, centers, partnerships, and initiatives within the School of Education and across the University.

The two introductory cohorts (Pittsburgh and Johnstown) will begin summer 2009. Open houses for those interested in learning more about LIFTS will take place April 15th, 2009 at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit and April 16th, 2009 at the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown.

"It has always seemed strange to me that in our endless discussions about education so little stress is laid on the pleasure of becoming an educated person, the enormous interest it adds to life. To be able to be caught up into the world of thought - that is to be educated."Edith Hamilton
