As academics, we divide out time between research and teaching. We are well aware of how the publishing business is changing, but we also need to think of how students are changing. Information technology and expectations of students to use this as part of their learning and the impact that such changes have on the classroom, student-faculty relations, and student behavior in general are major issues that confront us today. The Senate Student Affairs Committee is examining this timely topic in the upcoming Senate Fall Plenary Session, "Interacting with the 21st Century Student".
The Plenary Session will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 beginning with a complimentary buffet lunch at 12:00 in the William Pitt Union, Assembly Room. There will be a distinguished panel to offer perspectives on Classroom Behavior (by Mary Margaret Kerr of the School of Education), Professional Behavior, Dealing with a Distressed Student as well as Technology in the 21st Century.
Following the panel perspectives, students will have the opportunity to discuss these same topics facilitated by Vice Provost and Dean of Students, Kathy Humphrey. We will hear from students their thoughts and comments regarding faculty and the use of technology. Both panels will offer Q&A sessions.
Further information about the program appears below. You are welcome to come to all or part of the program. Susan Hansen, Vice President of the Senate will initiate this important and timely program. We look forward to seeing you there on October 21.
