Full Time Faculty - Visiting Associate Professor

Dr.Jerry Longo had a lengthy career as a public school an an English teacher, principal, central office administrator and school superintendent. He was superintendent in the Steel Valley and the Quaker Valley School Districts, for 7 and 15 years respectively. Longo also served 6 years on the Pennsylvania State Board of Education and played a leadership role in a major reform of the state's curriculum standards.

Dr. Longo is the Executive Director of the Western Pennsylvania Forum for School Superintendents and Co-director of the Educational Leadership Initiative, ELI. He is a graduate of Leadership Pittsburgh, Year IV. Longo taught graduate classes at California University of Pennsylvania on Strategic Leadership and Technology in Education. Longo serves on the Board of Three Rivers Connect and is chairperson of the education committee. He is a member of the Middle States Association’s Strategic Planning Advisory Committee. He served for over a decade on the Board of ASSET, Inc., a model inquiry-based science program.

Longo was chosen as the 1997 Pennsylvania Superintendent of the Year, the 1995 Tri-State Area Study Council's Distinguished Educator, the recipient of the 2004 AASA President's Technology Award, A 1996 Distinguished Alumni of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, a recipient of the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators’ EI/John Kresovich Award for Innovation in Instruction and Use of Technology,the 2006 Pennsylvania Music Educator's Superintendent of the Year and the 2007 Western Pennsylvania Library Association Advocate Awardee.

Dr.Longo has studied leadership issues at the Norham
Centre for Leadership Studies at St. Peter's College, Oxford, the Leadership Institute at the University of Southern California and with the Center for Creative Leadership of Greensboro, NC.

His responsibilities in the School of Education include co-directing the Educational Leadership Initiative, coordinating the Western Pennsylvania Forum for School Superintendents and teaching in Administration and Policy Studies.

His professional interests are in strategic leadership, labor-management collaboration, governance and policy, technology, and school and curricular reform.

  • Western Pennsylvania Forum for School Superintendents received a grant for operational support from the Heinz Foundation in the amount of $25,000.
  • Western Pennsylvania Forum for School Superintendents received fees for operational support from school districts in the amount of $35,384.
  • Educational Leadership Initiative in the Woodland Hills School District, The Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Woodland Hills School District have secured the services of ELI to assist in stabilizing the high school and junior high schools as a part of our ongoing work in improving student learning and promoting harmony and shared leadership in the district. This effort is supported by both the Pennsylvania Secretary of Education and the Woodland Hills School Board and Superintendent. The amount of the award is $250,000.

Recent Collaborative Efforts

  • Program or Teaching
    • As a new element of the Western Pennsylvania Superintendent's Forum, we have created an advisory committee comprised of leaders from business, government, basic education, higher education and non-profits. This group advises regional school superintendents on issues requiring public leadership by superintendents. Last year's topic revolved around NCLB and resulted in a published OP.ED. in the Post Gazette. This year's advice centered around student health and environment.
  • Research or Scholarship
    • I have consulted with CCT regarding the development of Cisco Education 3.0 Leading Indicators. EDC's Center for Children and Technology, investigates the roles that technology can play in improving teaching and learning within children's classrooms, schools and communities. They also design and develop technology applications that support engaged, active learning and student-centered teaching practices. (More Information...) [http://cct.edc.org/]

    • Allegheny County Challenge Program Advisory Council. This program is intended to create a bridge between high school students and regional employers.
    • Trustee, Laughlin Center for Children
    • 2009 Education Experience Co-Coordinator, Leadership Pittsburgh. We arranged for 60 LPXXV fellows to visit 8 regional high schools and explore the socio-economic and academic differences.
    • Strategic Advisory Committee, Commission on Secondary Schools, Middle States Association
    • 3 Rivers Connect, 3rc, Board Member and Education Committee Chair
    • ASSET, Inc., Leadership Council, former Board Member and President. Currently a member of the ASSET,Inc. Education Leadership Council.
    • Facilitator of a series of CEO to CEO meetings with regional school superintendents, Administrative and Policy Studies and CEOs from the Allegheny Conference, the focus of which has been workforce quality.
