Full Time Faculty - Assistant Professor
SARAH E. SCOTT is an Assistant Professor of Reading Education in the Department of Instruction and Learning. She is member of the Reading faculty and an active faculty member in the Language, Literacy, and Culture program.
Dr. Scott researches the specialized knowledge that teachers use as they teach children to comprehend text. This research builds on the legacy of Lee Shulman, Deborah Ball, Pamela Grossman and others who are concerned with understanding how teachers need to know their subject matter differently in order to teach it. In addition to researching comprehension instruction, Dr. Scott is also engaged in research focused on the design of innovative approaches to enhancing teacher education, specifically in the areas of language and literacy.
Dr. Scott teaches literacy methods courses in Pitt's MAT program, master's level courses on text and text comprehension in the reading specialist program, and supervises doctoral and master's students engaged in independent research.
