Certificates

• Reading Specialist Certificate - PA State Teaching Certification - It is recommended that the applicants have an initial teaching certificate and some teaching experience. A minimum of 21-24 credits is required.
• Supervisor of Reading Certificate - PA State Supervisory Certification - Students entering the program must have completed a master's degree. Eligibility for receipt of this certificate requires a minimum of 5 years teaching experience in the field after obtaining the Reading Specialist Certificate. A minimum of 24 credits beyond the masters is required.
• MEd plus K-12 Reading Specialist - includes PA State Teaching Certification - Combined degree and certification program. A minimum of 36 credits is required.

Degrees

• Master of Education (MEd) - Focuses on generalist work in reading education. A minimum of 36 credits is required.
• MEd plus K-12 Reading Specialist - includes PA State Teaching Certification - Combined degree and certification program. A minimum of 36 credits is required.
• Doctor of Education (EdD) - Candidates are expected to focus on the application of theory and research to problems of teaching and learning in schools and related settings; and have reasonable depth in research theory, and instructional practice in at least one reading concentration.
• Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) - Candidates are expected to develop a sound grounding in current research and theory in reading, an understanding of the historical and philosophical issues that have influenced work in reading education, and advanced knowledge in the academic disciplines that support their profession.
