Reading Education - Reading Specialist Certificate Overview

The School of Education offers preparation that leads to certification as a Reading Specialist for those individuals with backgrounds closely related to education. Reading Specialist certification is required in Pennsylvania for individuals who teach developmental or remedial reading in a departmentalized secondary school or for those who serve as diagnostic and remedial reading teachers at the elementary level.

This certification is valuable for elementary teachers since one of their primary roles is teaching reading. The K-12 Reading Specialist certification is designed for individuals who wish to prepare themselves to work with students in grades Pre-K - 12, and to work with adults experiencing reading difficulties. The program also provides experiences for those working as literary coaches.
