Leadership Initiative for Transforming Schools (LIFTS):
K-12 Principal Certificate Program
The newly designed principal certificate program grounds the personal and professional growth of aspiring school leaders in three themes: Ethics, Inquiry, and Integrity. Leadership will be studied through the lenses of ethics as leading schools wisely in complex and uncertain times; inquiry - as understanding the dynamics of knowledge production; and, integrity as navigating the moral context of education and diversity. Drawing from cutting edge research in fields of education and
management, the program will develop effective change agents through curricular blocks emphasizing leader as learner, instructional leadership, institutional leadership, and public leadership.
Unique features of the program include:
- Off-campus cohorts - Allegheny Intermediate Unit 3 and University of Pittsburgh Johnstown. A third location, Beaver Valley IU 27, is under development for Summer 2010.
- 24-credit, 15-month program completed with a cohort in 4 consecutive terms (summer, fall, spring, summer)
- Curriculum designed to accommodate working professionals through use of: Intensive Summer Leadership Institutes, Executive Course Formats in fall and spring, hybrid seminars, and internship experiences
- Partnership with the Center for Executive Education, Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business and collaboration with the Institute for Learning and the Learning Policy Center.
