While interest in fitness and health has continued to grow, professionals serve to optimize exercise, physical activity, and lifestyle management for all people. A goal of wellness remains to help all individuals achieve an optimal level of health, well-being, and human performance through fitness and athletics. Offered for undergraduates through the University of Pittsburgh and the School of Education, the Wellness specialization prepares students for entry level positions in closely supervised
health-fitness programs within education and industry, or in performance settings which provide coaching and training to those involved in sports and athletics.
In 2003, the American College of Sports Medicine endorsed the curriculum for the University of Pittsburgh Undergraduate Wellness Program. This curriculum covers the knowledge, skills, and abilities expected of an ACSM Health/Fitness Instructor.
The HPA faculty presently offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Wellness, with a 121-credit minimum to satisfy graduation requirements. The department has initiated the Wellness specialization in response to the growing need to prepare athletic and fitness specialists for continually changing and expanding professional roles. The unique feature of this specialization is the four options available for professional focus in the following areas:
