Admissions for Foreign Language Education - Master of Education (MEd)

Admissions Requirements

  • Completed School of Education Admissions Application.
  • A non-refundable application fee of $50 (USD) by credit card, check, or money order payable to 'University of Pittsburgh'.
  • Complete individual transcripts of work done in all undergraduate and graduate study. An overall minimum QPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in undergraduate work is required.
  • Official, third-party evaluation of all international transcripts for applicants who have not received a master's degree within the United States. We strongly recommend using World Education Services (WES) to complete this service.
  • Three letters of recommendation from professional persons in the field of education familiar with the applicant's teaching experience.
  • A written statement of career goals and degree objectives.
  • Applicants whose native language is not English are required to provide evidence of English proficiency in one of the following ways:
    MEd Only:
    • A minimum TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 80 on the IBT
    • OR a minimum TOEFL of 213 on the CBT
    • OR a Band 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
    • OR an academic degree from an accredited institution in the United States
    MEd with TESOL*:
    • Overall scores
      • A minimum TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) score of 100 on the IBT
      • OR a minimum score of 250 on the CBT
      • OR a Band 7.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
    • Individual skill scores
      • TOEFL scores rated "high" in Reading and Listening (22-30) AND scores rated "good" in EITHER Speaking (26-30) or Writing (24-30)
      • OR IELTS scores in Speaking and Writing must be combined to reach a minimum of 13
*Note than an academic degree from an accredited institution in the United States does not fulfill the English proficiency requirement for MEd TESOL.

Deadlines

Fall Deadline:

  • MEd Only: Rolling admissions*; however, priority given to applications received by March 1
  • MEd with TESOL: February 15

*Please note that international students must have all application materials submitted by June 1 for fall consideration.

Spring Deadline:

  • MEd Only: Rolling admissions*; however, priority given to applications received by November 1
  • MEd with TESOL: November 15 (part-time only)

*Please note that there are no spring admissions to full-time students.

Summer Deadline:

  • MEd Only: Rolling admissions*; however, priority given to applications received by March 1
  • MEd with TESOL: No summer admission

*Please note that there are no summer admissions to full-time students.
