Health & Physical Activity

The Department of Health and Physical Activity (HPA) focuses its academic, research, and service efforts on promoting active lifestyles and other health-related behaviors to enhance quality of life. The breadth of our research gives undergraduate and graduate students a broad range of opportunities to gain research and clinical experience with people of all ages and fitness levels.

HPA's expertise and history of success has attracted research funding in the areas of physical activity epidemiology, obesity prevention and treatment, perceived exertion, fitness training, health promotion, and motor performance.

The School of Education’s outstanding faculty often collaborates with other schools at the University of Pittsburgh, such as the School of Nursing, the School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Public Health, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) hospital network, leading to a singular academic experience.
