Barone Gibbs B, Smith P. A Physical Activity Paradox. Is Occupational Physical Activity Bad for You? Colloqium. American College of Sports Medicine, Orlando FL, May 2019.
Regular participation in physical activity is associated with improved quality and length of life. Yet, evidence published in 2018 - including a meta-analysis of ~200,000 people in the British Journal of Sports Medicine - suggests that high physical activity performed in an occupational setting is associated with an increased risk of mortality. This colloquium will integrate research from two disciplines. First, an occupational epidemiologist will review evidence that high physical activity at work increases mortality. Next, an exercise scientist will discuss the research quality and plausibility of the mechanisms by which high occupational activity might lead to poorer health and increased mortality. The overarching goal would be to come to a consensus about whether a paradox between health effects of occupational vs. leisure time physical activity is biologically plausible, and the potential mechanisms at play in producing these mixed findings, as well as future research directions in this area.
