Adjunct Faculty

Dr. Lelei is the Associate Director, African Studies Program, University Center for International Studies (UCIS) at the University of Pittsburgh; and, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Administrative and Policy Studies, School of Education. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Education, Department of Administrative and Policy Studies, with a concentration in International and Development Education. In her research she focuses on Education in Africa, gender and education, rural communities and sustainable development. She was a recipient of a World Bank Scholarship (1994) that enabled her to pursue a master’s degree in library science with a concentration on the role of academic libraries in Higher Education in Africa, and also received the British Council Technical Assistance scholarship (1990) that enabled her to pursue advanced training in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at the University of Leeds, England. Before coming to the United States to pursue her graduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh, she was a high school teacher in her home country of Kenya (1987-1990) teaching English as a Second Language and African Literature. She also worked briefly as assistant librarian at Maseno University (1991-1993), and for the British Council in Kenya (1996-1997) as outreach coordinator for a rural development program in Western Kenya aimed at improving teaching and learning resources for rural schools and professional development for teachers. Dr. Lelei is passionate about education in Africa and particularly the education of girls and women. She strongly believes that education is a major factor in the empowerment of women in African society and therefore more opportunities should be provided for women at all levels and in all fields. Dr. Lelei is an activist in advocating for quality improvement in education to fight poverty and promote sustainable rural development as reflected in her work and writings.
