Graduation Speaker

Carol O'Donnell photoCarol O'Donnell (BS '83), a graduate of our teacher education program, is Director of the Smithsonian Science Education Center in Washington, D.C. She is responsible for all operational activities and planning for the unit, which aims to transform K-12 education through science in collaboration with communities across the globe. Prior to joining the Smithsonian, she worked at the U.S. Department of Education. O’Donnell began her science-teaching career in Virginia public schools. She currently serves on the part-time faculty of George Washington University.

December 2022 Ceremony Details
  • University of Pittsburgh School of Education August 2022 and December 2022 graduates are invited to participate in this ceremony.
  • Students are required to RSVP for the ceremony for themselves and for their guests by completing the online registration form.
  • Students are permitted to bring a maximum of 8 guests.
  • The graduation ceremony should last approximately 2 hours.
  • Students will be recognized individually as they walk across the front of the stage during the ceremony.

What Health Rules Will Be Followed?
Is Academic Regalia Required for Students?
  • Academic regalia is required for graduating students in order for them to be able to participate in the ceremony.
  • Only students in full academic regalia (cap, gown, tassel, and hood) will be permitted to participate. The only exception is for graduates in military uniform.
  • Students may order their academic regalia through the University Store on Fifth. Visit the store website for more information. Additionally, custom doctoral regalia is available here, but it takes up to 4-8 weeks to arrive at the store. 
Where is Parking Available?
  • Parking is available in the Soldiers & Sailors Parking Garage, which is located adjacent to the University Club. Additionally, limited on-street parking is available.

When Should Students Arrive?
  • Students should arrive for the ceremony by 5:30 p.m.
  • They should enter through the main entrances of the University Club. 
  • Students should arrive already dressed in their academic regalia.
What Happens Once a Student Arrives?
  • Once the student arrives, they should report to the registration table for check-in and to collect their name card.
  • The name card they receive at check-in will be used for for name announcing when they walk across the stage.
When Should The Guests Arrive? Where Will They Sit?
  • Guests should arrive by 5:45 p.m.
  • After arriving, guests should proceed to the seating area.
What Accommodations Are There for Individuals With Disabilities?
  • When the student completes their RSVP for the ceremony, they should indicate if any accommodations are required for individuals with disabilities.

Will There Be Photography?
  • There will be a photographer on site who will take pictures of the graduating students.
  • The graduating students will be emailed a link to the main picture gallery where they can download pictures.
Will Doctoral Students Be Hooded During the Ceremony? 

Hooding only takes place at the spring ceremony, but faculty members are welcome to come hood the doctoral students they advise in the “Gold Room,” where students will be assembling before the ceremony
