Hayley R. Weddle
Assistant Professor

Hayley Weddle is an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Foundations, Organizations, and Policy at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research addresses the equity implications of policy implementation across state and local levels. Across her work, Dr. Weddle focuses on developing meaningful and reciprocal partnerships between educational leaders, policymakers, and researchers. Her dissertation research, which has been published in Teachers College Record and Leadership and Policy in Schools, explored teacher collaboration as a pathway for capacity building in urban schools under pressure to improve. Building on this work, Dr. Weddle is currently interested in efforts to foster shared responsibility for multilingual learner education across schools, districts, and state education agencies.

In addition to her research, Dr. Weddle served as the 2019-2020 Student Regent on the University of California Board of Regents, representing undergraduate and graduate students across the UC system. In this role, she chaired the Regents Special Committee on Basic Needs, leading efforts to address food and housing insecurity. She holds an M.A. in Higher Education Leadership from San Diego State University and a Ph.D. in Education from the University of California, San Diego.

  • Selected to represent over 280,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students across ten UC campuses as the sole voting student on the governing body of the University of California.

Engagement, Partnerships, and Professional Service

Dr. Weddle currently serves as the Assistant Director of the Multilingual Learner Leadership & Policy Institute. Through this role, she collaborates with state education agencies and individual leaders to foster shared responsibility for multilingual learner education at the state and local levels.

Dr. Weddle recently served on the California Recovery with Equity Task Force chaired by Governor Newsom’s senior higher education advisor. She was selected as one of 15 education leaders in California to collaboratively develop an equity-focused plan to guide the state’s higher education recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
