Scholarships and Grants

Provides support for education-related expenses for students with financial need in the School of Education, including, but not limited to, books, lab fees, and academic travel.

Recipients must be planning to enter the field of teaching, child development, educational leadership, and/or related fields, and have shown great improvement, academic perseverance, determination and hard work in their academic studies.

The recipients must display a grit and drive by having overcome obstacles as they pursue a degree in Education.

This scholarship is for women, on a need basis, from the Altoona, Pennsylvania area who are in their junior or senior year.

Provides a partial scholarship in the School of Education for a student enrolled in the Teacher Certificate Program and/or Master of Education Program.

Each student receiving this award shall demonstrate a strong commitment to the field of Special Education and to the community by having been extensively involved in volunteer work with youth groups.

Selection of the awardee shall be made through a committee in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leading.

The School of Education Alumni Doctoral Fellowship Award funds newly admitted School of Education doctoral students.

This award may be used to fund, or increase the funding, for exceptional full-time a doctoral student(s) for a predetermined number of years.

Selection is based on the student’s outstanding scholarship as well as the student’s potential for a notable career in education.

Students who are awarded a fellowship must agree to two conditions:

1. The students will attend official School of Education Alumni functions
2. The students must work with their advisor/mentor to advance their doctoral program toward degree status

Provides scholarships for tuition educational expenses to students who:

1. Are enrolled in graduate school programs for elementary education in the School of Education
2. Demonstrate the need for financial assistance.

Eligible candidates should be raising children and/or be single parents and should through their interests and actions reflect the attributes of Annette Crantz Briskman.

To provide scholarships on the basis of need and academic merit to teacher education candidates.

Scholarship Fund in the School of Education

The fund will provide financial assistance to one or more students enrolled in the School of Education’s teacher preparation programs who intend to become teachers and who have attained a high level of academic achievement.

To support a graduate student in the School of Education who received their undergraduate degree at the University of Pittsburgh and who, through their interests and actions exhibit the following personal qualities, characteristics, and values that defines Carol Hershey, including but not limited to:

1. Compassion and kindness
2. Appreciation of people’s unique contributions and talents
3. Dedication to providing client-centered care
4. Empowering those whose confidence lags behind their capabilities
5. Using art and creative expression to promote healing and learning

Preference will be given to: (1) students who attended a public school in Fayette County, PA, and (2) students who are members of Phi Beta Kappa. This fund will be administered by the Dean of the School of Education or his/her designee.

To provide scholarships for students in the child development/childcare program in the School of Education.

This scholarship provides funding of up to $2,500 per term to community college students transferring to the School of Education

Endowment income is to be used to provide a financial aid award to a student enrolled in the School of Education. Award recipients are to be selected by the Dean of the School of Education.

To support graduate students in the Department of Health and Human Development with demonstrated financial need.

The purpose of this endowment shall be to support student resources, such as tuition scholarships, programs, and research support for graduate students in the fields of learning and physical disabilities in the School of Education.

The students will be selected by the Special Education Program in conjunction with the Chair of the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leading, and the Dean of the School of Education.

Merit and/or financial need will be considered.

The purpose of this fund is to recognize and support outstanding graduate students pursuing a degree in Education. The recipient shall be a full time graduate student making significant progress toward a degree in education with a specialization in Foundations of Education and/or International Education. The recipient must have demonstrated leadership abilities and maintain a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and show excellent potential for a career in teaching, research, and or educational administration.

Financial need shall not be a determinant in the selection of the recipient.

The award may be awarded to the same person in successive years to permit completion of the students degree plan.

Award recipients are to be involved in dissertation research with a preference for students doing their dissertation in an area of international education.

To provide financial support to students in the School of Education enrolled in the Mastersof Arts in Teaching Program, with preference for students from Western Pennsylvania. Recipients shall be selected by the Dean of the School of Education, in consultation with the Chair of the Dept of ITeaching, Learning, and Leading based upon financial need.

To provide support for tuition and other education expenses for student(s) in the School of Education. Preference given to students studying applied developmental psychology.

Provides educational expenses for students in the School of Education who are majoring in secondary education with the intention of becoming secondary education teachers with a preference for those in foreign language study.

Awards will be given to students who enroll and remain in good academic standing.

This support is renewable provided that the recipient continues to meet the academic standards of the University.

This fund will be administered by the Dean of the School of Education or his/her designee.

To provide scholarship support in the School of Education as decided by the Dean.

Endowment income is to be used to partially support the education of one in-state student enrolled in the School of Education. Support is to be for one term each year.

Provides support to a faculty member, graduate student, or undergraduate student in his/her junior or senior year in the School of Education, including the Applied Development Psychology Program, whose research and/or field of study is concentrated on the intersections of children’s learning and technology in formal and informal education settings and in society at-large.

This fund will be administered by the Dean of the School of Education or his/her designee.

This fund is created in connection with African American Alumni Council to support tuition scholarships or other educational expenses such as books, research, or travel for students enrolled in the School of Education’s Elementary Education program or Elementary Education teacher education programs.

Preference will be given to students with a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.0-3.5.

The selection will be made my the Dean of the School of Education or his/her designees in consultation with the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leading.

To provide support to one or more students enrolled in the School of Education pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees in educational administration.

The income is to be used to provide scholarships to gifted individuals majoring in elementary education at either the undergraduate or graduate level.

Scholarship recipients are to be selected based on both financial need and academic merit.

A recipient may reapply in successive years, although his or her qualifications must be re-evaluated.

The selection of recipients and the determination of scholarship amounts shall be in the sole discretion of the persons charged with that responsibility by the Chairperson of the Department of Teaching, Learning and Leading in conjunction with the Office of the Dean.

To provide a scholarship to a student in the Social Studies Education program whose academic credentials and teaching skills promise to continue Dr. Dorow’s legacy.

To provide scholarships to students enrolled in Elementary Education Master’s Program in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leading.

To be eligible a recipient must be a graduate of a public high school in the USA and must have received a baccalaureate degree from a public college or university.

Scholarships may provide for either full-time or part-time tuition and may, on occasion, provide for room and board and/or living expenses, including books, if the situation merits.

Scholarships shall be awarded on a financial need basis for teacher education students with strong academic records who are enrolled in the School of Education’s Master of Arts in Teaching program.

Endowment income shall be used to provide support for tuition and other education-related expenses for undergraduate/graduate students in the School of Education.

Preference will be given to students (i) pursuing degrees in Mathematics Education, Science Education, or Master of Special Education and (ii) planning to teach in a middle school or high school setting.

The Fund will be administered by the Dean of the School of Education or their designee.

To be awarded annually to graduates of high schools located within the City of Pittsburgh who designate that they are going to enter the teaching profession and who pursue their studies directed toward preparing themselves for the teaching profession at the University of Pittsburgh.

Endowment income is to be used to provide financial support to individuals pursuing their master’s degree in teaching with a preference for students in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leading. This fund will be administered by the School of Education

To provide support to students in the Mathematics Education program of the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leading.

Priority will be given to current math teachers who are working towards an advanced degree in the School of Education who [a] demonstrate a financial need and within this group [b] have the highest academic record. In addition, preference should be given to residents or teachers from the following Pennsylvania counties: Allegheny and Washington.

The purpose of this endowed fund shall be to support student resources such as tuition scholarships, books and supplies, programs, research and/or conference support for Mathematics Education students as determined by the Dean and selected faculty of the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leading.

To be awarded annually to a student or students in the School of Education who fulfills the requirements set by the University.

Preference to a student from the North Side of the City of Pittsburgh or the North Hills area of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

To create a partial scholarship for a commuter student interested in becoming a teacher who is a member of a fraternity or sorority.

To provide financial aid to a student enrolled in Special Education Professional Year Program (master’s or doctoral). Award recipients are to be determined by dean of school of education and faculty members representing the special education program.

School of Education funds to be used as school sees fit

Supports student resources such as tuition scholarships, books, programs, research, and conference support for students in the School of Education as determined by the Dean and selected faculty of the department.

To a graduate student pursuing a degree in the area of Health and Physical Education. The recipient must have maintained a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, must evidence a broad and varied background, and must show excellent potential for a professional career in physical education and/or exercise science.

In no case will any preference be shown to applicants by reasons of race, color, religion, ethnicity, national origin, age, marital status, veteran, handicapped status, or location of residence.

Financial need may be a determinant in selection of the recipient.

The recipient will be selected by a committee appointed by the Dean of the School of Education. The recipient shall receive the scholarship stipend at the beginning of the academic year.

Scholarships shall not exceed the cost of tuition.

To provide financial support for graduate students in the School of Education.

Preference will be given to students who have more than five years of experience in the classroom and have expressed interest in returning to the classroom upon their degree.

In addition, preference should be given to residents or teachers from the following Pittsburgh communities: Ingram, Crafton, Sheridan, Elliot, Thornburg, Robinson, Kennedy, McKees Rocks, and Carnegie.

The fund provides support for tuition and other education-related expenses for student(s) enrolled in the undergraduate Teacher Education program in the School of Education.

Preference shall be given to student(s) who are planning to teach secondary math or who have a particular focus on elementary math; have served as a math or STEM education tutor; or are transferring from a community college.

Scholarship award recipients are to meet the following criteria:

1. Major in Elementary Education with the intention of becoming elementary education teachers
2. Resident of Western PA
3. High level of academic achievement coupled with financial need.

To provide scholarships for deserving applicants.

For the purpose of tuition assistance in the School of Education and the School of Engineering.

For scholarships in the School of Education as the Trustees of the institution may deem advisable.

Provides support for education-related expenses for students in the School of Education who will be or are studying to become teachers.

Income used for, but not limited to, books, lab fees, and travel.

Provides support for undergraduate or graduate students in the School of Education for education-related expenses including, but not limited to, experiential learning opportunities, conference fees, travel costs, research, course materials, and global experiences.

Income may not be used for awards/prizes or expenses billed by the University as defined by the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, which currently include tuition and mandatory, course, and program fees.

First priority will be given to student(s) who are members of the Pitt Band.

Provides support for tuition and other education-related expenses for student(s) in the Visual Impairment and Blindness Programs in the School of Education.

Income should be equally distributed between the School of Education and School of Engineering for academic resources, such as books, equipment and travel.

Selection of award for each school shall be based upon academic achievement and financial need as determined by a selection committee appointed by the Dean of the particular school.

To provide a scholarship to a student who is entering either the professional year program or the Master of Arts in teaching program.

Provides academic resources such as books, equipment and travel to students of School of Education based upon academic achievement and financial need

To support fellowships, scholarships, and student tuition assistance

The scholarships shall be awarded based on financial need and academic merit with the approval of the Dean of the School of Education.

Endowment income shall be used to provide an award to one or more outstanding graduate student(s) pursuing a degree in the School of Education, Department of Health and Human Development.

Preference shall be given to students with:

1. outstanding academic achievement
2. a broad and varied background aimed at improving health and well-being
3. who demonstrate professional involvement and service beyond the required academic coursework
4. who show excellent potential for a professional career in exercise physiology, physical education or a closely related field.

This fund will be administered by the Dean of the School of Education and the Chair of the Department of Health and Human Development, or their designee.

The award is for students in the Reading Specialist Certification/M.Ed. program or to doctoral students in the Reading Education Program whose focus of study or research addresses the problems of students experiencing reading difficulties.

Candidates involved in improving learning outcomes for students experiencing reading difficulties can include the following:

• Those who are or will be teaching these students
• Those who are conducting research related to such students
• Those in teacher education programs who plan to prepare reading teachers/reading specialists who will work with such students

The award is merit-based and can be received in consecutive years by the same student, provided the student maintains his/her above-average academic standards.

This fund provides scholarships to gifted students majoring in Elementary Education at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Scholarship recipients are to be selected based on financial need and scholastic achievement. In conjunction with the Dean of the School of Education, the Chairperson of the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leading shall determine the amount of the scholarships and the awardees thereof.

A scholarship recipient may reapply for the scholarship in successive years if his or her qualifications are re-evaluated.

Provides support for indirect education-related expenses for a graduate student(s) who is pursuing a master’s degree in Elementary Education in the School of Education.

Expenses may include, but are not limited to, research, travel expenses, field study, and course materials.

The Fund should be administered by the Dean of the School of Education or their designee.

The Sekey Sisters Fund for students studying foreign languages.

Preference will be given to teachers with a special emphasis on students studying to be teachers of French.

This fund will be established and administered by the School of Education.

Annual award to a female student who is a junior in the School of Education.

To award educational expenses to one or more students from the School of Education who is pursuing a professional degree in education and has an outstanding academic record and exhibits dedication to improving public education.

Awards will provide financial support for Master of Arts in Teaching students in the English teacher preparation program.

Preference for the award shall be given to a student who has demonstrated a commitment to urban education or social justice in that the student will promote the use of literature studies, writing, and drama to help his or her students to be aware of social justice issues.

The Dean of the School of Education, in consultation with the faculty of the English and Communications Education Department, shall select the recipient based upon the foregoing criteria.

Support for tuition & other educational expenses for a deserving student(s) pursuing a degree in the Early Childhood Education Program. Preference will be given to a student(s) who is earning a Master of Education.

Provides funding for prizes, books, lab fees, travel or other educational expenses for students pursuing degrees in the University of Pittsburgh School of Education.

Provides support for books, lab fees, travel or other educational expenses for outstanding students in the School of Education.

Preference will be given to students in the Combined Accelerated Studies in Education (CASE) Program.

The fund assisst graduate students enrolled in the Exercise Physiology or Health and Wellness Management programs in the School of Education to support their “Big Ideas” or innovative research.

The fund will provide support to fuel students’ creative and innovative research endeavors and cover associated academic expenses.

To qualify for the award, students must develop creative and innovative educational and business ideas and tools in their fields of study that will help improve society.

Provides support for books, lab fees, travel, or other educational expenses for outstanding students in the School of Education.

Preference will be given to students in the Combined Applied Studies in Education (CASE) Program.

This fund is used discretion of the Dean of the School of Education for recruiting support and retention of students planning to teach in urban settings.

In addition,  funds are used to support recruiting activities aimed at attracting top students to urban education careers, merit awards to students who do their student or intern teaching in urban schools, and grant-in-aid to students who plan to become urban school teachers.

The fund shall be devoted to assisting the School of Education for scholarships and tuition for full-time students.

The purpose of this endowment shall be to provide aid to undergraduate and graduate students.

Students must be working toward a degree in Teaching Education whether undergraduate or graduate, and such students must be considered full-time students.

Students may be partially or wholly self-supporting.

Aid may be in the form of a gift or a loan, with or without interest charges.

This fund is based on the following criteria: (1) The student must attend the University of Pittsburgh School of Education as an undergraduate student; (2) Must pursue a degree or studies in education; (3) Must demonstrate financial need; and (4) Preference will be given to graduates of the City of Pittsburgh public schools.

Income is to be used to provide support for tuition and other educational expenses for a deserving student(s) receiving a teacher certification in Foreign Language Education or its future equivalent in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leading.

Preference will be given to students who are earning their Master of Arts in Teaching degree or their Professional Year Certificate.

This fund will be administered by the Chair of Department of Teaching, Learning, or Leading, or his/her designee.
