The undergraduate minor in Secondary Teacher Education is a 15-credit program focused on secondary education (grades 7-12). Students will receive an introduction to teaching, special education, and issues in secondary education and will have the opportunity to take electives to further bolster their study.

This secondary education minor allows students who plan to enter a graduate program in secondary teacher education to make progress on prerequisite education courses. Completion of the minor does not automatically guarantee admission into School of Education graduate program, nor does it fulfill all necessary prerequisites.

The 15-credit undergraduate minor in Teacher Education is focused on secondary education (grades 7-12). It provides students with an introduction into teaching middle/high school, as well as foundational principles in special education and pressing issues in secondary education.


Pathway to Master’s Teaching Programs

This secondary education minor allows students who plan to enter a graduate program in secondary teacher education to make progress on prerequisite education courses. Completion of the minor does not automatically guarantee admission into School of Education graduate program, nor does it fulfill all necessary prerequisites.

Undergraduate students pursuing the B.S. in Teacher Education program may not double count courses toward a minor and a major.

The program does not provide a pathway to new teacher certification. Undergraduate students seeking teacher certification should pursue our BS in Teacher Education program.

Prerequisites

There are no specific prerequisites for the minor.  See below for admissions requirements.

Admission Requirements

Program requirements:

  • Students must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA
  • Students must have a declared major at the University of Pittsburgh
  • A maximum of 6 credit hours of education coursework may be transferred from another institution with Program Coordinator approval.
