The Council for Exceptional Children at Pitt is a student-led chapter of the internationally recognized Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), the largest professional organization dedicated to improving the success of students with disabilities and advancing special education.
As part of this broader network, our chapter is focused on mentoring future educators and professionals, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to effectively support and advocate for individuals with disabilities. We connect students with valuable resources, professional development opportunities, and a supportive community passionate about inclusive education and accessibility.
Whether you’re studying education, disability studies, or a related field, our organization provides a space for you to learn, grow, and advocate for equitable teaching practices that benefit all learners.
Our Mission
The Council for Exceptional Children is committed to promoting an inclusive and supportive environment where future educators, professional, and advocates can:
- Promote Evidence-Based Practices – Learn about research-backed strategies that improve educational outcomes for students with disabilities.
- Advocate for Inclusive Education – Engage in discussions and initiatives that support accessible learning environments in schools and beyond.
- Develop Professional Skills – Participate in networking, mentoring, and leadership opportunities that prepare members for careers in education, disability services, and advocacy.
What We Do
The Council for Exceptional Children provides students with opportunities to engage in meaningful experiences that enhance their understanding of inclusive education and disability advocacy. Our organization focuses on professional development, networking, and hands-on experiences to prepare future educators and professionals.
Here’s what we offer:
- Guest Speakers & Workshops – Learn from special education professionals, disability advocates, and researchers who share insights on best practices, policy changes, and career pathways.
- Community Engagement – Participate in volunteer opportunities with local schools, disability organizations, and advocacy groups to support individuals with disabilities.
- Professional Development – Gain access to training sessions on inclusive teaching strategies, classroom accommodations, and evidence-based practices that support diverse learners.
- Mentorship & Networking – Connect with experienced educators, administrators, and professionals in special education through mentorship programs and networking events.
- Collaboration with Other Student Organizations – Work alongside other student-led groups on campus to promote accessibility, diversity, and inclusion in education.
- CEC National Conference & Events – As a chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), members have the opportunity to attend the annual CEC Convention & Expo, where they can engage with leaders in the field, explore new research, and gain access to innovative resources. Attendance at certain national events is exclusive to CEC international members.
- Membership – Students in our organization has the opportunity to receive a free membership to the international Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), which includes access to professional resources, publications, and exclusive CEC events.
