Master of Education in World and Heritage Language Education with Specialization in TESOL
The Master of Education (MEd) program with a specialization in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) is a professional degree for individuals wishing to pursue advanced study in the field of teaching and learning English as a Second or Foreign Language. Course content emphasizes current theories and methods for teaching and evaluating students as well as curriculum and materials development. Students also complete a one-credit practicum experience that requires students to teach a course in the university’s English Language Institute.
- Program Duration: 2 years over four semesters (Full time) or 3-5 years (Part time)

- Course Requirements: 36 credits
- Format: Most courses are face to face. Some courses are offered online

- Admissions Requirements: GRE Exam Not Required
- Language Proficiency: Minimum TOEFL score of 95 and IELTS score of 7.0
The program incorporates coursework in both the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leading and the Department of Linguistics. Course content emphasizes current theories and methods for teaching and evaluating students as well as curriculum and materials development. Students also complete a one-credit practicum experience that requires students to teach a course in the university’s English Language Institute.
Students complete a guided research project on a topic of their choice and must successfully pass the World and Heritage Language Education Comprehensive Exam near the end of their program.
There are no specific prerequisites for this program.
Many of our students gain positions teaching English as a second or foreign language in higher education institutions in either the U.S. or internationally. Several of our part-time students enter the program with teaching positions and maintain their positions, but become leaders in their school contexts. Some of our students continue their graduate work in either PhD or EdD programs.
