Dr. Bob Gallagher retired in 2000 from the position of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to this position he served as the Director of the University of Pittsburgh’s Counseling Center for 25 years. From 1983 to 2000, he also served as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling Psychology and since that time has had a similar appointment in the Department of Educational Foundations, Organizations, and Policy.
Bob has authored many articles and monographs in his field and, until 2014, continued to publish an annual national survey of college counseling center directors that served as an important database for the profession. After turning over responsibility for this annual survey to the National Association of Counseling Center Directors, he arranged with the Pitt Library staff to have 33 years of the survey results made digitally available for future researchers on counseling center trends.
During his active career, Bob has held many leadership roles in national professional associations, including the Presidency of the International Association of Counseling Services, and he has received numerous leadership awards for his contributions.
Bob has also been a frequent speaker at professional conferences and has served as an external consultant at over 50 colleges and universities.
Although formally retired, Bob has continued to remain active through his ongoing consultation work and professional presentations on college counseling center trends and on humor as a stress reduction strategy. He also provided psychological evaluations for the University of Pittsburgh’s Police Department candidates. Among other such services, he has for the past 14 years worked three days a week providing psychotherapy to nursing home patients.
