Minor in Aquatics

The Minor in Aquatics is an undergraduate degree that prepares students to assume responsibilities related to aquatics in many areas.

Students are provided knowledge in aquatics-related teaching, administration, and coaching.

This minor will prepare students to earn certifications that are requirements for aquatic-related positions. Following completion, the student would be eligible to earn professional certifications including the American Red Cross Water Safety, Lifeguard Instructor, and others.

Program Overview

Outcome-Focused

The 15-credit minor prepares you to earn certifications and gain experience that permits you to work in pool and aquatic-related settings. In addition, the aquatic minor provides ancillary training for professionals in the areas of exercise physiology, physical or recreational therapy, and fitness trainers who are required to work in pool-related settings.


Experiential Learning

The minor provides practicum and teaching opportunities in the areas of beginning, intermediate, and advanced swimming instruction, swimming coaching, and aquatic-related classes (e.g.. Paddleboard yoga, aquatic exercise, etc).


Certification

Certifications are mandatory requirements for aquatic-related positions. Following completion, the Aquatics minor will certify students in American Red Cross Instructor courses (Water Safety, Lifeguard, and CPR/First Aid). The minor will also provide opportunity to pursue the Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification as well as United States Swimming Safety Training for Swim Coaches and other coaching certifications.


Degree Requirements

A practicum and internship presents students with the opportunity to demonstrate aquatic related skills in recreational, school, clinical, or private settings. An overall GPA of 2.5 or higher is required for graduation.

Course Sequencing

Many of the courses on the Plan of Study are offered once per year and are prerequisites for latter courses and therefore need to be planned accordingly.
