The undergraduate minor in Teacher Education is a 15-credit program focused on teacher education (grades preK-12). Students choose from courses that introduce them to the field and support their future work with youth. This teacher education minor allows students who plan to enter a graduate program in teacher education to make progress on prerequisite education courses.

Completion of the minor does not automatically guarantee admission into School of Education graduate program, nor does it fill all necessary prerequisites. The program does not provide teacher certification. Undergraduate students seeking teacher certification should pursue our BS in Teacher Education program.

Program Overview

Explore Teacher Education

The 15-credit undergraduate minor in Teacher Education is focused on the field of education. It provides students with an introduction to teaching as well as foundational principles in special education and pressing issues in secondary education


Pathway to Master’s Teaching Programs

This secondary education minor allows students who plan to enter a graduate program in secondary teacher education to make progress on prerequisite education courses. Completion of the minor does not guarantee admission into School of Education graduate program, nor does it fulfill all necessary prerequisites.


Minor Guidelines

The minor is open to all undergraduate students at Pitt, except for those majoring in a teacher education program in the School of Education. Students completing the Bachelor of Science in Teacher Education or the Combined Applied Studies in Education program cannot complete this minor. This is due to the University’s requirement that majors and minors not be in the same discipline.


Teacher Certification Not Included

This minor does not provide a pathway to new teacher certification. Undergraduate students seeking teacher certification should pursue our BS in Teacher Education program or the Combined Applied Studies in Education program.

Admission Requirements

Program requirements:

  • Students must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA
  • Students must have a declared major at the University of Pittsburgh
  • A maximum of 6 credit hours of education coursework may be transferred from another institution with Program Coordinator approval.
