Teacher Certification

What is teacher certification?

Whether your career goals include teaching French to tenth graders, transforming local public schools, or developing curricula and activities for special needs students, the School of Education offers you a wide variety of teaching certification options, each of which provide you with the training needed to achieve your career goals. Our faculty-led courses embody an essential combination of research and clinical-based instruction, providing you with up-to-date knowledge and on-the-job experience that will lead to your success as a professional educator.

The MAT program options, listed below, offer you the opportunity to simultaneously gain a Master of Arts in teaching degree and meet the requirements to obtain a Pennsylvania Instructional I Certificate in grades 7-12. Our MAT program also offers the most current curriculum selections, a collaborative cohort structure, and an innovative mix of online and hybrid courses.

The School of Education also created the Certificate in Urban Education, which helps prepare pre-service teachers to be successful in urban schools by plaving them in an urban school setting during their student teaching experience, as well as pairing them with skilled mentors who help them build positive relationships with their students. We also work with schools through programs like the Western PA Writing Project, which helps educators become better at teaching writing.

The CASE Early Childhood Certification program option, also below, allows students to work on two degrees and two teacher certifications. Students completing the program will have a BS in Applied Developmental Psychology and an MEd in Instruction and Learning, as well as a dual certification in PreK-4 Early Childhood and PreK-8 Special Education. The CASE program has a robust component of social justice and diversity coursework in the curriculum that prepares students to work in today’s classrooms.

In addition, we offer Administrative and Professional Certificates, which are suited to those prospective students who have already achieved their initial teaching certifications. Please see our Teacher Certification FAQ for more general information about our teacher preparation programs, or investigate any of our individual program offerings below.
