Improving Structures and Systems in Education
The Pitt School of Education’s Department of Educational Foundations, Organizations, and Policy (EFOP) explores the sociological, historical, economic, organizational, and political foundations of education and schooling. Guided by our commitment to pursuing equity and social justice, we focus on improving structures and systems for P-20 education (prenatal through post-secondary) in domestic and international environments. We study educational institutions, non-formal educational organizations, and the role of education in society.
Supporting Multi-disciplinary Knowledge
Serving students across the school, our EFOP department is home to a multidisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners, with expertise spanning economics, higher education, organizational theory, philosophy, research methodology, and sociology. We focus on the foundations of education, the processes of educational improvement, and the domains of higher education, urban education, and international education in relation to policy and organizational analyses.
Shaping Practice and Policy
Our EFOP department is engaged in far-reaching analyses of power and structural inequities in educational systems. Through our scholarship and teaching, we examine the influence of culture, institutions, systems, and histories across various preK-12 and higher education contexts. We pursue and produce knowledge that deepens the school’s commitment to educational equity and justice.
